To Do Today!

I'm sick... I barely made it through yesterday... SO here is your to-do list for today. To make things simple, I will group you and give you specific tasks.

Grade 12's - Marshal, Ryan, Roann, Nic
You are going to take the next four classes to create a photo slideshow of everyone in your Grad Class. We'll put it up on Facebook and YouTube when it is done, so people can share and keep the memories.

Here are the steps on how to do this:

  1. First, ask Ruth in the office for a list of all the grads. Today.
  2. Find a camera(s) to use that will take decent photos and download easily to a folder. Ask Ms. Jerome in the library if you need help. A iphone can do the work, just make sure you get up-close or get an easy to use photo-editing app. Today.
  3. Take fun/good photos of every single grad. Group photos are fine.
  4. Keep track as you go. The goal is to have one photo of every grad.
  5. Download all the photos to a shared folder.
  6. Edit the photos. Crop out all the boring stuff.
  7. Upload the photos to something like Photostory, or even Powerpoint (One photo per slide).
  8. You can add funny, inspirational, positive quotes to each image if you want.... maybe even ask every student to pick their favourite quote or...?
  9. Pick a song(s) to add to the slideshow.
  10. Create the slideshow. Save the file.
  11. Put it up on Facebook and Youtube.
Audrey, Leah (and... I'd like you to mentor/meet Chelsea Brydon)
  • Please catch Chelsea up on your plans and projects.
  • Chelsea please tell them about your idea too.
  • Ms. Swanson is giving you $47 for the garden.
  • You must figure out a way to fundraise the rest. A bake sale? A concession lunch?
  • Start researching/planning where to shop.
Dennis and Patrick
  • Your letters are ready to go. See the back blackboard.
  • Get a letter and piece of paper delivered to as many AG teachers as you can today.
  • I emailed all the teachers to say that you were coming - you can remind them to look at my email if need be.
Alexa, Gillian, Leann, Jeff Young - please clean the windows in the foyer.... try to get as little mess on the floor as possible, chat with the ever awesome Gord. Leave the front door paint. Thanks! :)

Madi, MacKenzie, Morgan - You are in charge of the next Spirit Day. Find a theme, pick a day, start developing a printable poster. :)

Jake, Liam, Alina, Savanna - how did the Hair Day go... discuss... and because the photo booth probably did not happen, go out and get some photos of crazy hair.... decide on some winners. Tell the office. Then email me the names and I will get prizes to school tomorrow. This is not optional. This must be done today.

Christian, Sarah, Sierra, Kassidy, Alex - Ms. Swanson says no to a 30 hour famine... but suggests you look at putting together a Relay-forLife team. Get online. Do the research. Start organizing a team(s). It`s an overnight relay run and walk... that is so much fun. Isfeld always has at least a few teams. We should do this too!

If I missed anyone... just a join a group! Have a fun afternoon. Early dismissal. Woo!

Then, we can go around the school with blank pieces of white paper TODAY... getting hundreds and hundreds to sign them sending Nick their good wishes. Then we can just paste those pieces of paper into the card and roll it up and mail it like a poster to the hospital in Vancouver. 2 people to make giant card. Four teams of two or three to go around talking to classes and asking people to sign. Remember to explain that you are from the Leadership class and that we want to send Nick all the heart and good wishes that we can... leave it on my desk and I will mail it ASAP.
  5. Planning a next spirit day?

How to Lead Everyday... tips for new leaders.

The Leadership Class is a TEAM.

What can TEAM stand for?

Because we are on a team, we need to work hard to inspire one another everyday.
There's a quote by Helen Keller that drives home the value of seemingly trivial, yet critical ways, to lead in everyday ordinary moments.
"I long to accomplish great and noble tasks, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker."

10 SIMPLE YET SIGNIFICANT DAILY TO DO'S FOR LEADERS

1. Be the hardest worker today. Without fail, one of the quickest ways to impact a team is with your own work ethic. Choose to be one of the hardest workers on your team today.

2. Be a spark of energy and enthusiasm today. Let your passion for life shine through today. Spread a contagious energy and enthusiasm amongst your teammates.

3. Model mental toughness today. Because your teammates will look to you under pressure, adversity, and stress, be sure to model mental toughness today. Bounce back quickly after errors to show your teammates how to respond to negative situations. Maintain your poise and optimism despite any mistakes you might make so that your teammates can trust and rely on you to get them through the tough times.

4. Connect with a teammate today. Leadership is all about relationships. Invest the time to build and strengthen the relationships you have with each of your teammates. Inquire about their day, challenges, and goals. Make a special and ongoing effort to get to know everyone on your team, not just your friends and classmates.

5. Compliment a teammate today.  As Mother Teresa once said, "Kind words are short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless."

6. Challenge a teammate today. Challenge at least one of your teammates today. Positively push them and yourself to make the most of your day.

7. Support a teammate today. Odds are, at least one of your teammates is struggling with something today - it could be a performance slump, a rocky romantic relationship, a disagreement with a coach, an unglamorous role, struggling with a class, or a sick family member. Good leaders are consistently on the lookout for teammates who might be struggling and are ready to offer an ear to listen, an encouraging word, a pat on the back, or a shoulder to cry on.
8. Constructively confront negativity, pessimism, and laziness today. As a leader, have the courage to constructively confront the negativity, pessimism, and laziness that will crop up on your team from time to time. Instead of fueling the fire by joining in or silently standing by, be sure to refocus your teammates on solutions rather than dwelling on and complaining about the problems. Left unchecked, these problems can quickly grow to distract, divide, and destroy your team.

9. Remind your team how today's work leads to tomorrow's dreams. It's easy to get bogged down during your season with monotonous drills, tiring conditioning, and demanding workouts. Remind your teammates how all the quality work you do today gives you a distinct advantage over your opponents. Help them see and even get excited about how today's hard work is a long-term investment in your team's goals, rather than just a short-term hardship or sacrifice.
10. Represent yourself and the Leadership Team with class and pride today and every day. Leaders have the awesome privilege and responsibility of representing their school.  During the class, I will send you out into the school to get things done. You are expected to be a model of leadership while you are doing so. Hold a door open for someone, say please and thank you, behave respectfully, etc. Ultimately, learning how to model kindness, work ethic, and positive action will set you up for a lifetime of respect and success.

Remember - Taking advantage of these 10 tiny pushes of leadership will ultimately make a huge impact on your team.  from: http://www.teamcaptainsnetwork.com/public/301.cfm

Welcome to Leadership

1) Meet the Creature - Meet the Outline too!

2) Our opening metaphor - "The Tree."

3) Groups of 4 - in order to lead you need to... listen, have heart, yield a whip, high five.

What are the most common problems with group work?
What can we do to avoid those problems?

4) Four Groups - Four Questions:

  • What qualities do we need to be leaders?
  • What is in our way? (What trees are on the road at Highland?)
  • What makes change happen?
  • What do we want to create/do this semester?
Record your ideas on stickies!

Leader to Me Project

We do not have a final exam in this class, but we do have a final project worth 20% of your final mark.

The Task: To prepare a slide presentation, and visual (handout, poster, video, anchor object, photo (student-created), art (student-created), interview transcript), that you will present to the class in the last days, about a person, alive or dead, that is an inspirational leader to you.
Who will you pick?

Today's job is simply to decide on who that person is and to tell Ms. Colborne by the end of class. You can also begin preliminary research...

See rubrics.
