To Do List To Do

Hi everyone,
Unfortunately, I am away at Isfeld this afternoon. I was booked into an important district meeting at the end of last year, so even though I did not see you on Monday because I was sick, I have to go.
So, once again, I am going to give you a huge to-do list. Please email me tara.colborne@sd71.bc.ca if you have questions. I may be able to be online during my meeting.
All
·         If you have not already done so, complete the Personal Mission Statement. Don’t know what this is? Find a classmate who can tell you.
·         Have we got a photo of you yet? You can email me a digital one. I’d like to get a leadership bulletin board going – with names and faces...
·         Are you attached to an organizing group? If not, you need to select a project to work on. See Below...
·         Go and like Highland Leadership on Facebook.
·         Send me an email telling me in point form what you accomplished this week. If you have questions, ask them. J
Terry Fox Run
·         Where are the announcements? Email them to me today, please. (“Did you know?”s about Terry Fox, or a trivia contest – these need to be typed up and emailed – with a reminder about the date) ex. The Terry Fox Run will be held on Thursday, Sept 27th – bring in your Toonies for Terry. Every two dollars raised earns you a ticket to a draw for some amazing prizes. Prizes will also be awarded for costumes – think pink hair, tutus, Halloween costumes... whatever you can think of, you can run in.” ETC>..
·         Where was the lunchtime jellybean table yesterday?
·         Where is the step by step plan at? It should be typed up or written out and photocopied and submitted to me. I have no idea what I can do to help. Please communicate with me.
·         Get banners up – put the emphasis on the date. What’s your catchy line going to be?
·         FYI– ask Mr. Grantham about the ipad – it may be up in the air.
·         Don’t forget that every two dollars that you donate gets you a ticket for a draw to major prizes, the house that raises the most money gets to die their VP’s hair blue/gold. We need to state our goals.
·         Is the dedication board made yet? I’m running for...
·         Etc... please do not let my absence stop you from progressing. MR. Grantham will be coming to visit to talk to you about the ticket process. We need to get these out to AG teachers ASAP.
·         Ask me for help. Talk to me... J

Spirit Day – Formal vs. Hawaiian.
·         Create a poster. Make it “pop.”
·         Pick a new date.
·         Create some banners.
·         Email me some announcements with a list of what days to send them out on...

Facebook/Social Media
·         Can someone make the page better looking?
·         I want 200 FB likes by the end of next week – make it happen – spread the word.
·         Post something about the Terry Fox Run – link to the foundation website... maybe we can figure out if kids can donate online.
·         Twitter – if you are on there, please follow us: https://twitter.com/HighlandLeaders

Random Acts of Kindness – I saw only ONE quote go up after last class... who wants to watch the Together We Are Invincible video and record all those quotes and put them up around the school?
Create Your Own Event Idea – type up a proposal/plan. Brainstorm.
Create a Dance Proposal - to Submit in a formal meeting with Ms. Swanson. I suggested to her:
What about graduated dances?
  • In grade 8, you get a daytime dance, of only 2 hours length, with only a basic DJ, and parent volunteers.
  • If you caused no problems in grade 8, you are allowed to attend grade 9 and 10 dances. They are in the early evening 6 - 8, better DJ.
  • If you stayed out of trouble at dances in grades 9 and 10, you get to go to a real high school dance 7-10, full DJ show...
What do you think would be best for successful dances? Type it up!

Leadership cannot really be taught. It can only be learned.

Work Week!

Are you ready to lead?
(TOC - please read and print out, as needed)

  • This is the week that you get all the time you need to work on whatever project you want to attach yourself to (see choices and to-do list below).
  • I hope in the first two weeks you have understood that it takes maturity, heart, impulse control and loads and loads of positive energy to be a leader.
  • Let me say, that you're a great group of students... I see we have a lot of natural leaders, and lots and lots of energy, so I believe you will do great things this semester.
  • Okay, here are you choices of what to work on today:

Terry Fox Run Events - To Do Ideas (I'm sure Rhea has a list, as well):
- Start Designing Daily Announcements - email those to tara.colborne@sd71.bc.ca and I can submit them to the office for you.
- Ask Mr. Lagrandeur if he wants us to make the dedication board. "I'm running for..."
- I think the posters we were given do not have the date  - can you make and put up an add on sheet that has the day and the date? Ex. Highland's Biggest Terry Fox Run Sept. 27th, 2012...wear costumes, raise money...prizes to be won.
- Make banners... paint is around my desk. Paper is in the staffroom. Keep the message simple and clear.
- Every AG teacher needs a way to submit names to a draw. Can someone begin to design a sheet that has tickets that can be cut out by and AG teacher and a place for a teacher to write a student's name on each ticket?
- Do what Rhea says. :)

Create a Spirit Day Group - I think we should host a spirit day this Friday. Let's keep this first one simple. Something like a Ties and Tiaras Day or, maybe, given the NHL lockout, we could have a dress like a Sports Hero Day (this could be a great way to launch the sports teams who are having some of their first games this weekend).
- First, decide on a theme.
- Paint at least 6 banners - put 'em up.
- Create small posters - keep the message straightforward.... print 20 and put them up.
- Write announcements for Tuesday - Thursday, and then email them to tara.colborne@gmail.com
- If you can think of an easy lunch-time even to attach to the spirit day, let me know... like, if you go with the sports theme, watching an old classic hocket game in the multi-purpose room at lunch... or...???

Random Acts of Kindess Group
- find positive quotes on the internet and post them up around the school... make sure each and every one is appropriate for a school.

Social Networking Crew - go to our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Highland-Leadership/160435274046320 and like it... then I will see about making some of you administrators so that you can post photos and announcements. For starters, you can each take an ipod out of the library and start taking photos of Leadership students at work - then, you can download the photos and make a slideshow. Give it a try!

Independent Idea Groups - Hatch a plan of your own. Fill in an event planning form.

PS - the bookable lab is for us today... spread out... :)

10 Thing Authentic Leaders Do

1) Clubs and Teams Day
  • Clean up
  • Discussion - What worked well in your group? What would you do differently? What can we learn from you?
  • Team should debrief later.
2) Authentic Leaders Reflection - create 10 groups. Line up in order of birthdates....

What would your life look like if you had absolutely no fear? What kinds of things would you do if you lived from a frame of reference that your thoughts literally could form your world? How brightly would your light shine if you stepped out of the limitations that are keeping you small and stretched yourself well past your comfort zone into the place that you know, deep within, you are meant to be? Authentic leadership is all about being the person you know in your heart you have always been destined to be. Authentic leadership does not come from your title or from the size of your paycheck. Instead, this form of leadership comes from your being and the person that you are.

Each group must read one of the following points about Authentic Leadership. They will be called on to explain and make it real for us - how does this idea relate to us here at Highland? All should speak to some degree.

Here are 10 things that authentic leaders do on a regular basis:
  1. They speak their truth. In business today, we frequently 'swallow our truth'. We say things to please others and to look good in front of The Crowd. Authentic leaders are different. They consistently talk truth. They would never betray themselves by using words that are not aligned with who they are. This does not give anyone a license to say things that are hurtful to people. Speaking truth is simply about being clear, being honest and being authentic.
  2. They lead from the heart. Business is about people. Leadership is about people. The best leaders wear their hearts on their sleeves and are not afraid to show their vulnerability. They genuinely care about other people and spend their days developing the people around them. They are like the sun: the sun gives away all it has to the plants and the trees. But in return, the plants and the trees always grow toward the sun.
  3. They have rich moral fiber. Who you are speaks far more loudly than anything you could ever say. Strength of character is true power - and people can feel it a mile away. Authentic leaders work on their character. They walk their talk and are aligned with their core values. They are noble and good. And in doing so, people trust, respect and listen to them.
  4. They are courageous. It takes a lot of courage to go against the crowd. It takes a lot of courage to be a visionary. It takes a lot of inner strength to do what you think is right even though it may not be easy. We live in a world where so many people walk the path of least resistance. Authentic leadership is all about taking the road less traveled and doing, not what is easy, but what is right.
  5. They build teams and create communities. One of the primary things that people are looking for in their work experience is a sense of community. In the old days, we got our community from where we lived. We would have block parties and street picnics. In the new age of work, employees seek their sense of community and connection from the workplace. Authentic leaders create workplaces that foster human linkages and lasting friendships.
  6. They deepen themselves. The job of the leader is to go deep. Authentic leaders know themselves intimately. They nurture a strong self-relationship. They know their weaknesses and play to their strengths. And they always spend a lot of time transcending their fears.
  7. They are dreamers. Einstein said that, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." It is from our imaginations that great things are born. Authentic leaders dare to dream impossible dreams. They see what everyone else sees and then dream up new possibilities. They spend a lot of time with their eyes closed creating blueprints and fantasies that lead to better products, better services, better workplaces and deeper value. How often do you close your eyes and dream?
  8. They care for themselves. Taking care of your physical dimension is a sign of self-respect. You can't do great things at work if you don't feel good. Authentic leaders eat well, exercise and care for the temples that are their bodies. They spend time in nature, drink plenty of water and get regular massages so that, physically, they are operating at planet-class levels of performance.
  9. They commit to excellence rather than perfection. No human being is perfect. Every single one of us is a work in progress. Authentic leaders commit themselves to excellence in everything that they do. They are constantly pushing the envelope and raising their standards. They do not seek perfection and have the wisdom to know the difference. What would your life look like if you raised your standards well beyond what anyone could ever imagine of you?
  10. They leave a legacy. To live in the hearts of the people around you is to never die. Success is wonderful but significance is even better. You were made to contribute and to leave a mark on the people around you. In failing to live from this frame of reference, you betray yourself. Authentic leaders are constantly building their legacies by adding deep value to everyone that they deal with and leaving the world a better place in the process.

Welcome to Leadership!

(Announcement: Leadership is on days 1 and 3 only - for everyone...)

1) Meet the Creature - Meet the Outline too!

2) Our opening metaphor - "The Tree."

3) Groups of 4 - in order to lead you need to... listen, have heart, yield a whip, high five.

What are the most common problems with group work?
What can we do to avoid those problems?

4) Four Groups - Four Questions:

  • What qualities do we need to be leaders?
  • What is in our way? (What trees are on the road at Highland?)
  • How can we make change happen?
  • What do we want to create?
Record your ideas on our circle brainstorms. Circles are symbolic of so very many things.
