PJ's and Poster Design

1) PJ Day - MPR booked - need to talk to Ms. Gerome about screen and projector. Need to bring kettles for hot chocolate... and find one of those big silver things. Need to find out if we can stream the show in the MPR - can wireless do it? Do we need a loooooooooooong network cord.... or should we plan it in another room - say next door and take out all the desks and tell everyone to bring blankets and pillows? Announcements.

Random - what about a randome acts of kindness week?

2) A good leader helps us to see. A great leader helps us to feel. Leaders can do that in so many ways - you were trying this with your videos. Now let's try it with visual design, with posters.... What are the essentials of excellent visual presentation?

3) Everyone to paint a PJ Day sign. Flood the school with spirit... you can work in a pair. No large groups.

Examples to consider - what do they share in common?

How to Start a Movement

1) Discussion - What did we learn from the dancing guy? What kind of movement would you start if you could? What kind of Youtube stunt/idea/video would you do, if you could?

2) Brainstorm Video Project - not much is going on right now and you guys need a challenge to wake you back up... so here it is... make a video that you would be comfortable with anyone seeing. It should be positive, have a purpose and it should represent some of the aims of good leadership. It can be to start a movement... it can be a PSA... it can be simple or complicated.

See Storyboard and Rubric Handouts.

Last Habit - Sharpen the Saw!

1) Discussion - Habit #7 - you are a saw! Seriously. You are your own best tool so you have to take care of yourself.

This means you need find a healthy balance in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. What can you do to find balance in each area?

Physical:
Social/Emotional:
Mental:
Spiritual:

Covey quote: "As you renew yourself in each of the four areas, you create growth and change in your life. Sharpen the Saw keeps you fresh so you can continue to practice the other six habits. You increase your capacity to produce and handle the challenges around you. Without this renewal, the body becomes weak, the mind mechanical, the emotions raw, the spirit insensitive, and the person selfish. Not a pretty picture, is it? Feeling good doesn't just happen. Living a life in balance means taking the necessary time to renew yourself. It's all up to you. You can renew yourself through relaxation. Or you can totally burn yourself out by overdoing everything. You can pamper yourself mentally and spiritually. Or you can go through life oblivious to your well-being. You can experience vibrant energy. Or you can procrastinate and miss out on the benefits of good health and exercise. You can revitalize yourself and face a new day in peace and harmony. Or you can wake up in the morning full of apathy because your get-up-and-go has got-up-and-gone. Just remember that every day provides a new opportunity for renewal--a new opportunity to recharge yourself instead of hitting the wall. All it takes is the desire, knowledge, and skill"

2) To-Do/Chores:
-Clean blue tables in MPR
-Start cutting out poppies for Remembrance Day ceremony. Need red paper. Need template.
-Change calendar in room to November. Nov. dates?

3) Take charge of your Take 20!
- you can attend tonight's Community Meeting for credit! See article...

Smashing good movie...

Hey guys - I have to be away today. I am sorry.

You have two things to do today. Smash some pumkins into gray bins (there is one outside the staff room doors - and you can ask Ms. Peacocke for more if you need it). Find your way to the Multi-purpose room and smash as many pumkins as you can into the big grey bins.

Then - pick a movie (I've brought in a pile from my home collection)... put you feet up and enjoy. You have been doing some awesome things in this school and you deserve a break, a little reward. See you soon!

(I'm escorting my husband to a medical appointment out of town...)

To do, to do, to do!

Hi everyone, my little daughter has fallen sick, so I am away today... my apologies.

1) What are your sparks? Read http://www.edinapcn.com/PDFs/Sparks_summary.pdf as whole class. Discuss these questions: Does the list of sparks make sense? What is your spark? Does school give you a place for you to ignite your sparks? If you do not have a spark, pick one to try out - make that your personal project. Monday, I will ask you to write about this topic... so mull over your sparks over the weekend.

Now, here is your massive TO DO list - divide and conquer:
  • The Halloween Announcements must be emailed to me, to forward to the front desk staff - tara.colborne@sd71.bc.ca
  • The hallway bulletin board must have Halloween information on it today.
  • Please ask the front desk staff if they will be costume judgers on the Monday.
  • A voting ballot needs to be made for pumpkin selections - all the AG's and three categories...
  • Gym Blasters must have the notes to teachers in their boxes to help in their classes on Monday, if needed. Confirm with Ms. Swanson that prizes and supplies are ready to go. I will contact Youth Unlimited for a Monday pick up. Are we ready for Tuesday?? If we aren't what are we missing?
  • Spookogram candy bags need to be made. I will drop off supplies at some point today... Oh ya, and we need an announcement for this too. The table should be set up at lunchtime - Wed, Thursday and Friday - deliveries will need to be made on the Monday. How are we going to do this?? Figure out a way. Email me the plan and the announcement. tara.colborne@sd71.bc.ca Spookogram help is needed, please volunteer to help, if you have not got a task in progress.
  • Other personal, group project planning - we have the Bookable Lab if we need it.
Have a great weekend!

Persuading - Or how to sell a toothbrush...

1) What is a pitch? (Matt Damon and Ben Affleck story)

2) Can you sell a toothbrush? Pairs brainstorm. Who wants to try?

3) Here's the deal:
  • Believe it yourself. Passion and energy persuade!
  • Have a vision. Can you describe your idea in 20 words or less? Can you make someone "see" it? Imagine...
  • Be a perfectionist when it comes to promotional materials. Your poster should be visually engaging, your brochure should be triple-edited, your presentation should follow the 10/20/30 rule, etc...
  • Dress like a leader.
4) Who wants to try to sell that toothbrush again?

5) Project time - see notes on board...

Habit 6 - Synergize!

Habit 6: Synergize To put it simply, synergy means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. But it doesn't just happen on its own. It's a process, and through that process, people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One plus one equals three, or six, or sixty--you name it. When people begin to interact together genuinely, and they're open to each other's influence, they begin to gain new insight. The capability of inventing new approaches is increased exponentially because of differences. Valuing differences is what really drives synergy. Do you truly value the mental, emotional, and psychological differences among people? Or do you wish everyone would just agree with you so you could all get along? Many people mistake uniformity for unity; sameness for oneness. One word--boring! Differences should be seen as strengths, not weaknesses. They add zest to life. We are trying to synergize everyday in here! If you really knew me, you'd know I'm great at.......

2) It's October! Time to reflect...

We started the class with some questions. We had some answers... but we were naive.
Let's discuss some again. This time we'll make time for quiet reflective writing, and then we will all share one at a time.

What is the character of a leader like?
Answer in 100 words or more...

Share.

3) Brainstorm - Project Ideas

International - international food fest, ready The World Needs your Child for ideas... charity, etc...

4) Habits Review and Habit #4 -

Habit 1 - Be Proactive
I am a responsible person. I take initiative, I CHOOSE my actions, attitudes and moods. I do not blame others for my worng actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.

Habit 2 - Begin with the The End in Mind
I plan ahead and set goals. I have a personal mission statement. I keep my values at my centre. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my school and my community and I look for ways to be a good citizen.

Habit 3 - Put First Things First
I spend time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.

Habit 4 - Think Win-Win
I balance the courage to go after the things I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in other's emotional bank accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives.

Win-Win Activity:

Monday, Sept.25th

1) Habit #3 - Put first things first:

Watch a silly video that makes this habit as plain as day and will hopefully inspire us to get ready for the Terry Fox Run.

All - collect rocks and write on them the things that you need to do, take care of... the bigger ones are more important... the small stuff, can wait...more strategies about this later.

2) Terry Fox Run Prep - all can help if needed...

TO DO:
- Today's announcements are in. See below...
- Need Slideshow for TV's - the images are great but we need large font (we have to be able to read it from far away) communicating stuff like: Brave the Shave on Tuesday, Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, Bring your money to your AG, to the money window or to the events. You can also donate money online. Once the slideshow has been edited carefully. No errors. Talk to Ms. Jerome in the library...she will tell you where to save it.
- Make the Shilling - Hair Wanted poster.... I think we should add it to the slideshow, if possible.... then print it and get it up on bulliten boards around school.
- The tickets need to be finished... and we'll keep the back ups too.

3) Overdue: Leadership Bio, Podcast notes, Personal Mission Statement, Clubs Day Folder/evaluations, Spanish Food event plan...

Monday Announcements (Print) - Who's got the guts to get their hair shaved off to raise funds for the Terry Fox Run? If you do, put your name down on the sign up list at the office TODAY. The Brave the Shave event will be held Tuesday at lunchtime, location to be announced. All money raised will be put towards the Terry Fox Run, and, if we make our goal of rasing over a $1000.00, we'll also be shaving Mr. Schilling's head on Friday! All participants will receive tickets to a draw for prizes.

Bring your money for the Terry Fox Run today, tomorrow and on Wednesday. You can give in your AG, at the money windoe or you can donate online (see the Highland yearbook facebook page for the link). During the Brave the Shave Challenge and during the run you can also donate to the students holding the collection containers.

Did you know that Terry Fox was from BC? He was only 22 years old when he began his marathon of hope. He ran for 143 days across 5,373 kilometres. That's almost a marathon a day.

Monday Lunchtime PA - Don't forget to sign up for the Brave the Shave challenge in the office.

Monday Afterschool PA - Last chance to sign up for the Brave the Shave challenge and raise some money for the Terry Fox Run. Sign your name to the list in the office.
